Bio

Abdul Ali is a poet and writer living in the District of Columbia. A native New Yorker, his work spans the malleable spheres of personal and public and pays particular attention to cityscapes, and the urban experience. He’s the proud papi of a five year-old daughter.

Abdul Ali’s work appears in the anthologies It’s All Love (Doubleday, 2008) edited by Marita Golden and Full Moon on K Street (Plan B Press, 2010) edited by Kim Roberts . His poetry has also appeared in Beltway Poetry Quarterly, The Amistad, The Washington Post, Tidal Basin Review, and is forthcoming in Gargoyle.

His commentaries, reviews, and nonfiction appear in The Root, The Grio, Scheme MagazineEssence, Black Issues Book Review, The Washington Informer, National Public Radio’s Talk of the Nation, POST NO ILLS, Scheme, among others.

Abdul Ali was the 2007 winner of the College Language Association’s Creative Writing Contest. He was a finalist for the 2008 Larry Neale Award. In 2009, he was the recipient of an Artist Fellowship for Literature by the DC Commission on the Arts.

Most recently, Mr. Ali co-founded with Crystyn Wright NeoBlack Cinema Project, an organization whose mission is to radically shift the images of people of color in film. We’re also dedicated to supporting independent artists through this media portal. We desire self-determination for independent black artists doing quality work that enriches our local and global communities.
